Preventive dental care, teeth brushing daily are essential for animal health
A lot of times we only know that was a problem for them after we set up the treatment and return to good health and have a change of behavior for the better, said Artzer. When it comes to dental care for the animals, two veterinarians from Kansas State University, hopes that the owners remember an important message: prevention is always better and often cheaper than treatment.
While prevention may be more to the owners, has the best result for their pets and often their wallets, said Marjory Artzer, an assistant clinical professor at K-State Veterinary Hospital Medical Education.
Most dental disease is best identified by a veterinarian, Artzer said, and to identify any dental problems, owners must ensure that their pets to get an oral exam every year with their annual inspection.
Both veterinarians said owners should start dental care when the animals are easy to train children so that they are used daily brushing. And ‘particularly important for small breeds because they are more at risk of periodontal disease.
But preventive measures, homeowners can improve the quality of animal life and prevent serious complications of periodontal disease, such as complicating factors for heart disease, kidney problems or other dental diseases.
Unfortunately, what we see is the average age old animals with the disease in the mouth really horrible, and the owners, in retrospect, wished they had done something at a young age, said Akers.
Dogs often easier to periodontal disease, from mild cases, which can be reversed by cleaning, to more advanced cases, where the dogs can lose their teeth, said Akers. Cats most commonly suffer from tooth resorption and inflammatory diseases in the mouth.
Dental care can help animals live long and happy life without pain, but no dental care can often lead to very negative consequences which can be very painful for our pets and very harmful to their long-term survival, Akers said.
With the best intentions of providing something that the owners may think is good, could have a very negative result, said Artzer. If we provide animals with appropriate toys to chew, which is a better scenario.
The owners should not give dogs bones or other toys are difficult because a common cause of tooth breakage.
These two conditions can be very painful for animals, but animals do not behave as if they are sorry for the disease to exist in the mouth, according to K-State veterinarians. Often the pain is slowly, so that the animal has time to adapt.
